Plenary I: Access to water and sanitation: A deal-breaker for achieving sustainable
development
Water scarcity affects more than 40% of the global population. At the same time, 4.2
billion people lack sanitation, while the majority of wastewater is released in the
environment untreated. Women and girls are disproportionately affected, including for
cultural factors This session will provide an overview of the status of universal access to
clean water and sanitation globally. It will show how Sustainable Development Goal 6
(SDG 6) on clean water and sanitation can drive sustainable development by
contributing to health and well-being, livelihoods and education, as well as the protection
of natural resources and the creation of healthy environments.

Plenary II: Innovative practices for inclusive and equitable access to water
Local communities are key stakeholders in water management and in understanding the
needs and perspectives of populations facing socioeconomic disparities in access to
water and suffering the most from environmental degradation, including women and
girls, Indigenous people and rural populations. The session will promote a dialogue
between parliamentarians, water advocates and innovators to share insights on effective
community engagement and legislative practices to address inequities in access to clean
water and water management. The session aims to inspire more inclusive
decision-making processes and partnerships between parliaments and local
stakeholders to co-create sustainable water management solutions.

Plenary III: Water at the heart of climate action
Water and climate change are inextricably linked. Climate change is exacerbating water
scarcity, with over two billion people already living in countries where water supply is
inadequate. Climate change is also making water more unpredictable and polluted.
Pressure on the supply of fresh water affects the production of food and energy,
jeopardizing progress across the SDGs. The session will provide an overview of climate
change as the main cause of water scarcity. It will discuss parliamentary efforts to
promote water efficiency, reduce water pollution and preserve water ecosystems, and
foster integrated action across the water-food-energy nexus.

the interface of water management, science and peace. It will also take a
