Special Committee on Artificial Intelligence in a Digital Age
The Chairman
IPOL-COM-AIDA D(2021)19810
To the Chairperson(s) of the Committee(s) concerned
Subject: AIDA Interparliamentary Committee meeting on 8 November 2021
Dear Colleague,
Artificial intelligence (AI), fuelled by increasing data availability, evolving algorithms, and
growing computing power, has been gaining momentum over the past years, and it is now
one of the key topics on political agendas in Europe and the world. The European
Commission published the pioneering AI Act proposal in April this year, and globally there are
many ongoing initiatives to ensure that the AI being developed is ethical, human-centric and
in service of democratic goals.
The European Parliament established the Special Committee on Artificial Intelligence in a
Digital Age (AIDA) in 2020 with the aim of exploring the impact of AI on the EU economy and
its different sectors, analysing the approach of third countries and charting the road ahead.
As a part of its work, AIDA would like to discuss AI and the impact it has on the EU with
national Parliaments.
Hence, AIDA would like to invite Members of the national Parliaments of the EU to attend
an Interparliamentary Committee meeting on the theme:
“Artificial Intelligence and the Digital Decade”
The purpose of the meeting is to exchange information and best practices on AI related work
done at EU and national level, and to gather further insights and expertise on latest AI
developments. The meeting would also be a forum for exchanging ideas on possible future
regulatory models for AI, and for deepening the AI dialogue between the European Parliament
and the national Parliaments.
We are therefore very pleased to invite up to four Members of the corresponding committee(s)
of each national Parliament (two from each Chamber in the case of bi-cameral Parliaments)
to attend this event remotely on Monday, 8 November 2021, from 13.45-16.00.
Practical details regarding the meeting will be forwarded in due course to your Parliament's
representatives/services responsible for relations with the European Parliament.
