SEIMAS OF THE REPUBLIC OF LITHUANIA
RESOLUTION
ON THE GRANTING OF EU CANDIDATE STATUS TO UKRAINE AND UKRAINE’S
FULL MEMBERSHIP OF THE EUROPEAN UNION
10 March 2022 No XIV-931
Vilnius
The Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania,
having regard
to the fact that on 28 February 2022, President of Ukraine Volodymyr
Zelensky officially applied for Ukraine’s membership of the European Union in accordance with
Article 49 of the Treaty on European Union,
building on
its Resolution XIV-930 of 24 February 2022 on the Aggression of Russia and
Belarus against Ukraine, which was adopted unanimously,
noting
that Ukraine has been seeking membership of the European Union for more than a
decade and that for the last five years Ukraine has been bound to the European Union by an
Association Agreement; therefore, this state’s application for membership of the European
Union is the result of its persistence in European integration aspirations,
stressing
that the granting of candidate status to Ukraine at this time would be an
important sign of moral support for its people, who are defending their homeland and right to
determine the future of the country by risking their own lives,
being convinced
that the admission of a country whose people have shown incredible will
and determination in the fight for European values will inspire and strengthen the European
Union itself,
supports
the granting of EU candidate status to Ukraine and its future full membership
of the European Union;
invites
all Member States of the European Union to support Ukraine’s aspiration to
become a full member of the European Union as soon as possible and to agree to the granting of
EU candidate status to Ukraine;
calls on
the institutions of the European Union to grant EU candidate status to Ukraine
without delay and to start negotiations on Ukraine’s membership of the European Union;
