STATEMENT
OF THE SAEIMA OF THE REPUBLIC OF LATVIA
On granting the EU candidate status to Ukraine
The Saeima of the Republic of Latvia:
pursuant
to the Statement of the Saeima of 24 February on the sovereignty and
territorial integrity of Ukraine;
noting
Ukraine’s request to become a full-fledged Member State of the European
Union;
considering
that by resisting the military aggression and wide-scale invasion by the
Russian Federation, Ukraine is exercising its rights to determine its own future and is
fighting for European values;
recognises
that every possible option should be employed to help Ukraine withstand
the fight to protect its national sovereignty and territorial integrity;
supports
granting Ukraine EU candidate status, as well as Ukraine’s full-fledged
accession to the EU in the future;
considers
it particularly crucial and necessary to express explicit support for Ukraine’s
goal of becoming an EU Member State;
calls on
EU institutions to work on granting EU candidate status to Ukraine as soon as
possible;
calls on
all EU Member States to support Ukraine’s efforts to become a full-fledged
Member State of the EU and to support granting EU candidate status to Ukraine;
maintains
that granting EU candidate status to Ukraine would be a crucial signal of EU
solidarity, attesting that Ukraine is a part of Europe, and is now valiantly with all its
might fighting for European values;
affirms
the readiness of Latvia to provide broad support for Ukraine on its path towards
becoming a full-fledged Member State of the European Union.
