Subject: Invitation to the Interparliamentary Committee Meeting of the Special
Committee on Beating Cancer
on “Turning the tide on cancer: the view
of national
parliaments on Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan” on 27 September 2021
To the Chairperson(s) of the Committee(s) concerned
Dear Colleague,
Since September 2020, the Special Committee on Beating Cancer (BECA) of the European
Parliament has been working on proposals for concrete actions for EU institutions and member
states that can help prevent and fight cancer, and for the best ways to support cancer research.
On the occasion of the publication of the
BECA draft report
by rapporteur Véronique Trillet-
Lenoir, I would like to invite Members of the national Parliaments of the EU to attend the
Interparliamentary Committee meeting
“Turning the tide on cancer:
The
view of national parliaments on Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan”
The EU has been working to tackle cancer for decades and its actions, for example on tobacco
control, protection from hazardous substances, rules for clinical trials for medicinal products
and promoting cancer screening, have saved and prolonged many lives. BECA examines how
to realize the ambitions of
Europe's Beating Cancer Plan,
presented in February 2021, which
sets out a new EU approach to cancer prevention, treatment and care. To this end, the draft
report by BECA Rapporteur Véronique Trillet-Lenoir has been published in June 2021.
The Interparliamentary Committee meeting will provide a good platform for an exchange of
views on the BECA draft report and Europe•s Beating Cancer Plan with parliamentarians from
the national parliaments and the European Parliament and with Commissioner for Health and
Food Safety, Stella Kyriakides, Ms Véronique Trillet-Lenoir MEP, Beating Cancer
Committee Rapporteur, Ms Birgitta Sacrédeus, Rapporteur of the forthcoming opinion of the
Committee of the Regions and Ms Małgorzata Bogusz, Rapporteur of the opinion of the
Economic and Social Committee.
