Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs
The Chairman
IPOL-COM-LIBE D (2020) 24905
To the Chairperson(s) of the committee(s) concerned
Brussels, 24 November 2020
Honourable Chairperson,
According to Article 85 TFEU and Regulation (EU) 2018/1727 on the European Union Agency for
Criminal Justice Cooperation (Eurojust) an annual joint evaluation of Eurojust’s activities b
y the
European Parliament and National Parliaments should be organised by the European Parliament
in the framework of an interparliamentary committee meeting h eld in Brussels, with the
participation of members of the competent committees of the European Parliament and of the
National Parliaments.
Given that almost one year has lapsed since the application of the new Eurojust Regulation, which
started on 12 December 2019 and the obligations, under Article 85 TFEU and the Regulation, to
organise such meeting in order to provide for parliamentary oversight we would like to invite you
to the evaluation interparliamentary committee meeting. The legal and logistical i ssues brought
about by the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as other recent developments in the area of judicial
cooperation, such as radicalisation, terrorism and cybercrime, are further compelling reasons to
hold an exchange between Eurojust and the European Parliament and National Parliaments
Against this background, and considering the importance of this issue, the LIBE Committee in
cooperation with German Bundestag and Bundesrat would like to invite Members of National
Parliaments to the interparliamentary committee
meeting on “The evaluation of Eurojust
activities”.
Taking fully into account the logistical constraints of the European Parliament, the
meeting is scheduled on Tuesday, 1 December 2020, from 14.45 to 15.45 and 16.45 to 18. -45,
in the European Parliament premises in Brussels.
The topics to be addressed include the impact of the COVID-19-pandemic on judicial cooperation
between the Member States, cooperation with third countries including with the United Kingdom,
Eurojust's new mandate and activities, and cooperation between Eurojust and the newly created
European Public Prosecution Office
.
I am therefore pleased to invite up to four Members of the relevant committee(s) from each
national Parliament (two from each Chamber in the case of bi-cameral Parliaments) to attend this
meeting. Due to the measures related to the Covid-19 pandemic, exceptionally the meeting will
take place by remote participation.
Should you be unable to attend, I would welcome any written contribution, which would be
distributed to our respective Members and other participants.
