THE SECRETARY GENERAL
LA SECRÉTAIRE GÉNÉRALE
031 CIR 21 E
3 February 2021
TO SECRETARIES OF DELEGATION FOR DISTRIBUTION TO ALL MEMBERS
Dear Member,
I am profoundly saddened to inform you that the Head of the Croatian Delegation to the
NATO PA, Professor Miroslav Tudjman, passed away on Sunday 31 January.
Mr Tudjman joined the NATO PA in 2012 and headed the Croatian delegation since 2016. He
had been re-elected to the Croatian Parliament for a fourth mandate last summer.
Professor Tudjman was a highly respected figure in Croatia for his role, alongside his father
–
Croatia’s first President – in the period leading to and following Croatia’s
independence.
Between 1993 and 2000, he served as the head of the Croatian Intelligence Service, a member
of the President’s
Defence and National Security Council, and
Deputy Director for National
Security.
He was equally respected as an academic and intellectual, serving as a tenured professor at
Zagreb University’s Faculty of Philosophy.
Professor Tudjman hosted the spring meeting of the Assembly’s Standing Committee in
Zagreb in March 2019, a truly memorable meeting which coincided with celebrations of the
10th anniversary
of Croatia’s accession to NATO.
His friends in the Assembly will remember him as a kind, calm, reasoned, unassuming
respectful, and true gentleman.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, relatives, and all members of the Croatian
delegation.
Messages of condolences can be sent to the delegation at:
Yours sincerely,
Ruxandra Popa
