The Chair
To the Chairperson(s) of the committee(s) concerned
Honourable Chairperson,
Roma inclusion and fighting anti-Gypsyism has been a long-term challenge for the European
Union and the EU Member States. The EU Framework for National Roma Integration
Strategies, adopted by the European Commission in April 2011 and subsequently endorsed by
the European Council, marked a joint commitment to address such challenge more effectively
and tangibly improve the situation by the end of the current decade. In its resolution of 25
October 2017 on “Fundamental rights aspects in Roma integration
in the EU: fighting anti-
Gypsyism”, the European Parliament called on the European Commission to put anti-
Gypsyism at the forefront of the post-2020 EU Framework.
Against this background, and considering the importance of this issue, the LIBE Committee
would like to
invite Members of national Parliaments to an inter-parliamentary
committee meeting on"
Fundamental rights aspects of Roma inclusion and fighting anti-
Gypsyism".
The meeting is scheduled for
Tuesday, 18 October 2018,
from
14.30
to
18.00,
in
the European Parliament premises in Brussels.
The inter-parliamentary committee meeting aims to promote an exchange of views between
European and national Parliamentarians on barriers to Roma inclusion and possibilities to
overcome them.
The meeting envisages the participation of the Council of Europe, the European Union Agency
for Fundamental Rights (FRA), the United Nations Human Rights Office (OHCHR), as well
as presentations from NGOs, bringing the global and the non-institutional perspective into the
discussions (see draft programme enclosed).
I am therefore pleased to invite up to four Members of the relevant committee(s) from each
national Parliament (two from each Chamber in the case of bi-cameral Parliaments) to attend
this meeting.
