Invitation to attend the conference
”The future of the United Nations in
international
peace and security”
Dear members of Udenrigsudvalget,
We are pleased to invite you to a conference on 17 January 2019, offering an opportunity to
consider the UN’s role in the (new) global order. The UN is currently finding its place in relation to
contemporary conflicts and emerging types of threats to international peace and security. In this
period of on-going reform efforts, the purpose is to strengthen the debate about how the UN
contributes to international peace and security. Further, the conference provides an opportunity to
discuss the role of small states and how these can improve international peace and security through
the world organization.
The conference is organized by the Centre for Military Studies at the University of Copenhagen, in
cooperation with the Danish UN Association and the Academic Council on the UN System. The
conference is supported by the Hermod Lannung Foundation. Mogens Lykketoft, as former
President of the UN General Assembly, will host the conference in Fællessalen at Christiansborg.
We are proud to announce that the former Deputy Secretary-General of the UN, Jan Eliasson, will
deliver the keynote address. Moreover, the conference will have three panel debates with world
leading scholars and practitioner experts in each area. The themes of the panels will be:
The UN’s
position
in the new global order
The UN’s conflict management: Between peacekeeping, prevention, human rights,
and
development
The UN’s reforms:
Progress or deadlock?
The conference will round off with a political debate. On the following page, you will find the
tentative programme including speakers.
This is an early and privileged invitation. As of 1 December, the invitation will be made public, and
the available seats are likely to fill quickly. RVSP to Troels Engell, who is the conference manager
on behalf of the organizers. He is available via email ([email protected]) and phone (+45 30746401).
