Dear Madam President,
Dear Mr. President,
We are pleased to send you the publication on the Results of the 140 Assembly of
the Inter-Parliamentary Union and Related Meetings, held in Doha (Qatar) from 6 to
10 April 2019.
The Doha Assembly was very successful, both in terms of participation and the quality
of deliberations. Over the course of the Assembly, some 1,500 delegates - including
over 70 Speakers of Parliament - from close to 160 countries and a variety of partner
organizations, addressed a number of topical issues. In addition to the official
sessions of the IPU statutory bodies, the Assembly featured several special events: a
very productive
Speakers’
Dialogue (first of its kind) which focused on rethinking our
governance models, workshops on energy poverty, on child and maternal health, and
on parliamentary action to counter terrorism and violent extremism, as well as a
Knowledge Fair on Education.
Our key objective is to tackle issues that have a direct impact on the lives of our
citizens, and to mobilize parliamentary action for positive change. As we have
underscored on multiple occasions, we aim to put people at the center of everything
the IPU does. We are also paying special attention to the political empowerment of
women and youth participation, and we continue to encourage all Member
Parliaments to step up efforts in this area, including in terms of greater inclusivity
when it comes of the composition of national delegations to our Assemblies.
The attached publication contains a summary of the work carried out by the various
IPU bodies, as well as the resolutions, decisions and other outcome documents
adopted during a very vibrant and substantive Assembly in Doha. These include:
