WORLD STORIES SEASON 2
MINERS SHOT DOWN
THE WORLD BEFORE HER
JUSTICE FOR SALE
ROUGH AUNTIES
Rehad Desai / South Africa / 2014
In August 2012, mineworkers in one of South Africa’s biggest platinum mines
began a wildcat strike for better wages. Six days later, the police used live ammu-
nition to brutally suppress the strike, killing 34 and injuring many more.
Nisha Pahuja / India / 2012
The Miss India pageant is the ultimate glamour event in a country that has
gone mad for beauty contests. Winning the coveted title means instant star-
dom, a lucrative career path and, for some girls, freedom from the constraints
of a patriarchal society.
Ilse & Femke van Velzen / Congo / 2011
Justice For Sale follows Claudine, a young and courageous human rights lawyer, in
her struggle against injustice and widespread impunity in Congo. She investigates
the case of Masamba, a soldier who was convicted of rape, and discovers that his
trial was corrupt and unfair. He was jailed without any concrete evidence.
Kim Longinotto / South Africa / 2008
The “Rough Aunties” are a remarkable group of women unwavering in their stand
to protect and care for the abused, neglected and forgotten children of Durban,
South Africa.
THE ENGLISH SURGEON
SISTERS IN LAW
THE VASECTOMIST
JAPAN:
A STORY OF LOVE AND HATE
Sean McAllister / Japan / 2008
Naoki, 56, had it all in Japan’s bubble economy days – he ran a business with 70
staff, drove a brand new BMW and lived in a six-bedroom house. But when the
economy crashed he lost everything, ending up divorced and penniless.
Geoffrey Smith / Ukraine / 2009
What is it like to have God-like surgical powers, yet to struggle against your own
humanity? What is it like to try and save a life, and yet to fail?
Kim Longinotto / Cameroon / 2005
A doc that delves into local courtroom drama in a small town in Cameroon, West
Africa, following the state prosecutor and judge - both women - as they ight sexist
attitudes and societal norms with a keen knowledge of the law, an acute desire for
justice and their own brand of compassion.
Jonathan Stack and Saralena Weinield / Philippines Haiti US / 2013
A urologist from Florida on a mission to save the planet “spreading the gospel
of vasectomy”. A modern day Don Quixote; part dreamer and part visionary
committed to the impossible quest of lowering the population on the planet, one
vasectomy at a time.
EXPEDITION TO THE END OF THE
WORLD
Daniel Dencik / Greenland / 2013
A real adventure ilm – for the 21st century. On a three-mast schooner packed with
artists, scientists and ambitions worthy of Noah or Columbus, we set off for the end
of the world: the rapidly melting icebergs of North-East Greenland.
BATTING FOR AFGHANISTAN
SEPIDEH
ALBINO BOY IN AFRICA
Timothy Albone, Leslie Knott, Lucy Martens / Afghanistan / 2011
An inspirational documentary following the Afghan cricket team who — against all
the odds — experience a meteoric rise up the international league tables in their
bid to qualify for the World Cup.
Berit Madsen / Iran / 2013
Sepideh wants to become an astronaut. She spends her nights exploring the
secrets of the universe, while her family will do anything to keep her on the ground.
Camilla Magid / Tanzania / 2012
In Tanzania albino body parts and blood are used in magic potions created by
witch doctors and are sold for huge amounts of money. To protect albino children,
the government sends them to boarding schools, far away from their families. Here
they live more or less abandoned in a world without adults.
PINK SARIS
BASTARDS
LAST DAY OF THE ARCTIC
WHEN I WALK
Kim Longinotto / India / 2010
The Gulabi Gang is a group of Indian women activists. Most of the Gang’s cases
concern domestic violence demands, and abusive in-laws.
Deborah Perkins / Morocco / 2014
In Morocco, as in all Muslim countries, sex outside marriage is illegal and women
bear the brunt of society’s disapproval. But what is the fate of the children of single
mothers?
Magnús Viðar Sigurðsson / Iceland / 2011
Ragnar Axelsson or RAX as he is commonly referred to, is a renowned world
photographer based in Iceland. In The Last Days of The Arctic we join RAX on his
journey as he visits friends he has made through his career.
Jason DaSilva / US / 2013
When I walk is one man’s emotional and inspiring journey during six years of life
following his multiple sclerosis diagnosis. For Jason DaSilva, life’s most challeng-
ing and joyous moments are yet to come.
NO BURQAS BEHIND BARS
BIG MEN
I WILL BE MURDERED
PLEASE VOTE FOR ME
Nima Sarvestani / Afghanistan / 2013
No burqas behind bars is a slice of life from inside one of the most restrictive plac-
es on the planet, Takhar Prison in Afghanistan where 40 women inmates, crammed
into just four cells, live their lives entirely cut off from outside society.
Rachel Boynton / Boynton Films Productions / US/Ghana / 2013
Big Men is about the struggle for money, acclaim and oil in Africa. It’s an epic
adventure of high-stakes capitalism, with shockingly intimate access to compa-
ny executives, government oficials and gun-toting militants. Kosmos Energy, a
Dallas-based oil company, discovers Ghana’s irst oil.
Justin Webster / Guatemala / 2011
In May 2009, Rodrigo Rosenberg, a wealthy, charismatic lawyer went cycling near
his home in Guatemala City and was murdered. Nothing unusal there: Guatemala
has a murder rate four times higher than Mexico’s, worse than Iraq’s during the
war. What remains extraordinary is that Rosenberg knew, for certain, he was about
to be killed.
Weijun Chen / China / 2007
Please Vote for Me is a 2007 documentary ilm following the elections for class
monitor in a 3rd grade class of eight-year-old children in China.

“The programme provide an
excellent and objective point
of view of the drama in the
Mexico - US border. It is a
human drama, with people
looking for relatives, better
way of life. It is very relevant
due the current electoral
process in USA: the migration
is a very complicated issue,
it is not a national security
problem for the USA, but an
urgent human issue between
both countries.”
“An enlightening insight
into part of China’s culture.
We need to see more of this
