Invitation to the LIBE Inter-parliamentary Committee meeting on “The
Implementation of the Data Protection package – At the eve of the entry into
force” on 15 May 2018 in Brussels
Honourable Chairperson,
I am pleased to inform you that the European Parliament's Committee on Civil Liberties,
Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) will organise an Inter-parliamentary committee meeting with
National Parliaments on Tuesday 15 May 2018 in the European Parliament's premises in
Brussels on the issue of “The implementation of the EU Data Protection Package at the eve
of its entry into force”.
On 27 April 2016, the European Parliament and the Council adopted Regulation (EU)
2016/679 (General Data Protection Regulation) and Directive (EU) 2016/680 (Data Protection
Directive for law enforcement purposes). These two instruments have achieved a major
breakthrough of the European data protection legal framework in order to establish a modern,
robust and consistent legal framework. The new data protection package strengthens the
protection of the individuals’ right to personal data protection, reflecting the nature of data
protection as a fundamental right in the European Union.
While the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will set a single set of rules for a
uniform application of the rules for all citizens and businesses, leading to a harmonised level
playing field and uniform protection of individuals, the “law enforcement Directive” will
establish a harmonised framework for the processing of personal data for law enforcement
activities, which replaces the different legal regimes existing before the Lisbon Treaty.
These instruments shall be applicable as of 25 May 2018, after a two years period given to
the Member States to implement these instruments into national law and adapt their national
legislation to the new legal framework.
National Parliaments are being deeply involved over these two years in the adoption of the
national legislation implementing the data protection package. Because of their crucial role in
this process, they are in a unique position to share their views and experience on the
implementation of the data protection package.
It is for this reason that the LIBE Committee would like to invite Members of National
Parliaments to an Inter-parliamentary Committee Meeting on “The implementation of the EU
Data Protection Package at the eve of its entry into force”.
