Mr. Nick Hækkerup
Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee
Folketinget
Christiansborg
1240 Copenhagen K, Denmark
Mr. Chairman,
A delegation from Peace Boat and the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons
(ICAN) kindly requests the opportunity to meet with the Foreign Affairs Committee of the
Danish Parliament in Copenhagen on 28 June 2018.
ICAN is a campaign coalition consisting of more than 450 non-governmental organizations in
100 countries with the aim of eliminating nuclear weapons. We were awarded the Nobel Peace
Prize in 2017 for our efforts “to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences
of any use of nuclear weapons” and our “ground-breaking efforts to achieve a treaty-based
prohibition of such weapons”.
Peace Boat is a Japan-based international NGO that promotes peace, human rights, equal and
sustainable development and respect for the environment. Peace Boat is the anchor of ICAN in
Japan. One of our major projects is “Global Voyage for a Nuclear-Free World – Peace Boat
Hibakusha Project”, which consists of inviting Hibakusha (survivors of the atomic bombings of
Hiroshima and Nagasaki) to participate in around-the-world voyages to share their tragic
experiences, to educate people about the devastating humanitarian impact of nuclear
weapons, and to engage policy-makers and catalyze public support to make a nuclear-free
world reality.
As part of our current Global Voyage for a Nuclear Free World - Peace Boat Hibakusha Project,
we will be in Copenhagen on June 28 with a delegation of Hibakusha, including Mr. Kouji Ueda
(Hiroshima), Ms. Terumi Kuramori (Nagasaki), 2nd Generation Survivor Mr. Kaoru Shinagawa
(Hiroshima).
We look forward to hearing from you regarding the possibility for our delegation to meet with
the Foreign Affairs Committee, some of its members, and/or yourself.
Yours Sincerely,
Akira KAWASAKI
