INVITATION
The New Way of Working and the role of the UN System in protracted crisis
– a country perspective from UNRC/HCs in Yemen, Lebanon, Somalia, Sudan,
Ethiopia and Uganda
UN City, 14 March 2017 at 1:45-3:00 p.m.
Today, two billion people live in countries affected by fragility, conflicts and violence. 65 million
people are displaced as a consequence; 95% live in developing countries and 2/3 are internally
displaced. The humanitarian system is pushed beyond its limits, and without durable solutions
these people remain vulnerable, inactive and denied development opportunities for years on end.
Consequently, effort is made to bring humanitarian and development partners together more
effectively, and blend short-term humanitarian tools that respond to shocks and sudden critical
developments, with longer-term development interventions that systematically tackle
vulnerability and risks.
Six UN Resident Coordinators/Humanitarian Coordinators (see full list below) will participate in a
high-level workshop on this issue in Copenhagen early next week. The event is organised by the
Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, UNDP, the World Bank and OCHA. We will capitalise on their
presence in Copenhagen and have invited them to the UN City for a short briefing session on their
role and challenges in the countries they serve, in operationalising The New Way of Working and
follow-up on the World Humanitarian Summit last year.
The event is open to all UN City staff and interested external actors.
For external participants, please register in advance on:
