Mr. President,
The Danish Union of teachers represents the teachers of public primary and
lower secondary schools in Denmark. We have been following the struggle of
our Turkish colleagues for many years and, unfortunately, we must face the fact
that the situation for the education sector of Turkey is alarming and more
critical than ever.
Under the guise of the emergency decree, an increasing number of education
staff are being suspended or permanently dismissed from their duties and a
large number of educators have been arrested and detained without trial,
among them several members of EGITIM-SEN.
This is not only a critical situation for the teachers, who have been dismissed
and cannot provide for their families, it is certainly also a tragedy for the
Turkish education sector, pupils and students and, thus, holds a risk for the
future of Turkey as a modern and democratic community.
The Danish Union of Teachers and the teaching community worldwide stand
in full solidarity with our Turkish colleagues and the teacher trade union
EGITIM-SEN. We will not turn the blind eye to the violation of human rights
in your country.
Yours sincerely,
Copenhagen, 13 January 2017
