Qatari nationality:
It is very difficult to acquire Qatari nationality and it is almost impossible for foreigners.
Residents in Qatar are deemed Qatari nationality primarily upon the principle of
jus
sanguinis
(right of blood).
Foreigners do not have any legal rights regarding application for permanent residence permit
and they are not provided with guidelines on how to apply.
According to article 2 in Law No. 38 of 2005 on the acquisition of Qatari nationality, a non-
Qatari may acquire Qatari nationality by decree of the Emir and if they meet the following
requirements:
1) A minimum of 25 years of residence and not being absent from Qatar for more than
two months in a single calendar year.
2) Lawful means of income.
3) Good repute and a clean criminal record.
4) Good knowledge of the Arabic language.
In addition only children born to a Qatari father may automatically receive Qatari nationality
although applicants of a Qatari mother shall be given priority (article 2).
If the parents are unknown, children who are born in Qatar are considered to be of Qatari
nationality.
