CONCERN FOR DEMOCRACY MOVEMENT IN HONG KONG
Dear Mr. Møller,
We, the Global Solidarity with Hong Kong in Copenhagen, represent a number of Hong
Kong residents in Denmark who are of strong concern to the latest pro-democracy
movement in Hong Kong. We are writing to bring our concerns to the Danish Parliament
and to solicit our host country Denmark’s support for the development of democracy in
Hong Kong.
Large scale protests and sit-ins have been staged in Hong Kong since 22 September 2014
to demand for universal suffrage to elect the chief executive in Hong Kong without the
pre-approval of candidates by China. While the mass civil disobedience movement is still
underway, regrettably, the Hong Kong government has not yet directly addressed
protesters’ demands through constructive dialogues. At the same time there have been
continuous allegations that the local police has exercised excessive violence and
questionable ways of law enforcement in handling the protests.
Our group, as part of a global campaign organized by overseas Hongkongers in around
60 cities, aims to raise support for the democratic movement in Hong Kong from the
international community. On 1 October 2014 we organized a rally, which was joined by
around 100 participants in Nytorv, Copenhagen, to show support for Hong Kong's pursuit
of democracy and universal suffrage. A total of 1,275 signatures supporting our cause
were also collected at the event.
We know we are not alone in our pursuit of democracy and freedom. Denmark has set
leading examples in establishing one of the most successful democratic states in the
world and in promoting and safeguarding citizens' human rights and freedom. As
temporary or permanent residents or even citizens in Denmark, here we have experienced
first-hand how such rights and freedoms can indeed be integrated into the everyday life,
realising the ideals shared by humanity. We therefore sincerely hope The Danish
Parliament would kindly consider the following:
