Dear fellow parliamentarian,
I am writing to invite you to attend a conference my Committee is holding in London on
Thursday 30 October on the impact of globalisation on taxation.
MPs across the world share an interest in eliminating harmful tax practices and promoting
fair and efficient tax systems. As demonstrated by the spotlight my Committee has shone on
the practices of multinational companies such as Amazon, Starbucks and Google, this
requires co-ordinated action at an international level. Our Governments have begun a
process of reforming the international tax system but thus far there have been limited
opportunities for parliamentarians to contribute to this work.
The conference will provide an opportunity to learn more about the G20 and OECD’s
agenda, and to debate potential stumbling blocks and next steps with each other and with a
range of business representatives, academics, campaigners and tax experts. We plan to
produce a conference report which we can use to feed back our views and ideas to key
policy makers. I hope the event will also provide a chance for us to share ideas with each
other more generally about effective scrutiny in relation to taxation.
We are delighted that the City of London has agreed to host our conference in the
prestigious
Guildhall.
We have invited a range of high-profile speakers and our provisional agenda includes:
An update on progress towards global tax reform from a UK Minister and/or
representative of the OECD Tax Team.
Keynote speeches from leading UK and US politicians on the case for, and
approaches to, tackling tax avoidance
The other side of the argument: views from leading businesses
A range of smaller breakout sessions with opportunities for networking and debate
We will provide more details of our agenda in due course.
I very much hope that you will be able to join us.
