Geneva, 17 September 2014
Dear Mr. President,
Your country’s latest periodic report on measures taken to give effect to the
Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women will be
th
examined during the 60 session of the Committee on the Elimination of
Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), which will take place in Geneva from
16 February to 5 March 2015.
The IPU has consistently promoted a stronger involvement of parliament in the
reporting obligations as stipulated in the Convention, and more particularly in the
necessary follow-up to be given to the concluding comments of the Committee. The
Committee itself has called for an enhanced involvement of parliaments in the
reporting process. You will find enclosed a copy of the Committee’s recommendations
in this regard. Your country’s report is available on the OHCHR website at
http://tbinternet.ohchr.org/_layouts/treatybodyexternal/SessionDetails1.aspx?SessionI
D=901&Lang=en.
In keeping with the foregoing, the IPU presents at each Committee session a report on
its activities in promoting respect and implementation of the CEDAW, including
information on the role played by parliament in the reporting process. In order to
provide the Committee with accurate data, we would be grateful if you could send us
any relevant information on the involvement of your Parliament in the preparation of
your State's report and any mechanisms set up to ensure adequate parliamentary
follow-up to the Committee's concluding comments. Please find attached a short
questionnaire. We would be most grateful if this could be returned to us by
1 December 2014 at the latest.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Martin Chungong
