Invitation: Copenhagen Energy Security Dialogues
On behalf of the German Marshall Fund of the United States and the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
we are pleased to invite you to the
Copenhagen Energy Security Dialogues.
This high-level energy and
foreign policy forum will take place November 2, 2014, at the Eigtveds Pakhus in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The forum will be opened by UN Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, and feature high-level
participants from across the world.
Energy is at the core of today’s greatest challenges. This year we have seen energy as a prominent
concern in the crisis in Ukraine. Globally, the difficulty of procuring sufficient energy resources or even
providing basic energy access inhibits progress on development goals and poses a very real challenge to
human security. The demand for energy is expected to grow as the global population grows and more
people are lifted out of poverty. This increased energy demand will heighten concerns over the security
of supplies and energy-related emissions. The lack of diversified energy supplies, comprehensive energy
efficiency policies and interconnected energy markets make even long-established energy producers
vulnerable to energy disruptions.
The transatlantic partners seek the engagement of developing countries and emerging economies to
collectively identify best practices and solutions to energy challenges with a view to improving global
energy security. Managing the array of available energy sources – from new oil and natural gas
discoveries, including shale gas, to innovative renewable technologies – is a challenge that the global
community must address together in the pursuit of sustainable development and improved energy
security.
The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs together with the German Marshall Fund of the United States are
therefore launching the
Copenhagen Energy Security Dialogues
to bring together leaders from the United
States, Europe and emerging economies to build greater understanding and cooperation on common
energy, security and development goals. The forum will create a unique atmosphere for intellectual
exchange that will allow participants to identify key areas of common concern, disseminate best practices
in policy and technological solutions, and provide policy direction to existing platforms for energy,
development, and security cooperation.
Please note that we need your response no later than October 29 in which you are kindly asked to include
full name, title, organization, and contact details to [email protected]. Due to security regulations, a formal
reply is required for admittance. We look forward to your presence at the event and invite you to
observe the main sessions and take part in the discussions that follow.
We very much hope that you will be able to join us in November.
Sincerely,
The Honorable Martin Lidegaard
Minister for Foreign Affairs
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Denmark
Dr. Karen Donfried
President
The German Marshall Fund of the United States
