Communication from the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification: copy of "Handbook
for Parliamentarians"
Honorable President Lykketoft,
Pursuant to a joint initiative by the President of the Steering Committee of the Forum of Parliamentarians and
the secretariat of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), I am pleased to share
an electronic copy of the “Handbook for Parliamentarians” with you. A draft of this document has been
reviewed on the occasion of the Tenth Session of the Round Table of Parliamentarians, which took place in
the sidelines of the eleventh session of the UNCCD Conference of the Parties in Windhoek, Namibia in
September 2013. The final version of the handbook is now available in French, English, and Spanish

The document aims to be a practical guide for the actions of parliamentarians in the context of the
implementation of the UNCCD and its 10-year Strategy (2008-2018). It further explores ways in which
Parliamentarians can stimulate adequate actions at national and international levels and foster greater
cooperation with all stakeholders involved in the UNCCD implementation process.
I do hope that the handbook will be useful to those parliamentarians working on sustainable development
issues, particularly desertification, land degradation, and the effect of drought.
