GARMENT AND TEXTILES PRODUCTION IN BANGLADESHPOST RANA PLAZA: A VISION FOR THE FUTUREIntroductionOn 24thApril 2013 the world witnessed one of the worst industry disasters in history when the eight-story Rana Plazabuilding collapsed and killed more than 1.000 people and injured several thousands. The building collapse in Dhakademonstrated the need to bring working conditions in line with international labour standards and reminded us all thatensuring that workers’ rights are protected and respected within value chains involves a wide range of societal actors, including governments, employers, buyers and workers’ representatives.Almost one year has passed. What lessons have been learned and what actions have been taken in Bangladesh andinternationally in the aftermath of the disaster? What is the vision for the garment and textile industry in Bangladesh andwhich steps and initiatives can bring us there? At the meeting high-level speakers from Bangladesh and key international organisations will share their vision for thegarment and textile industry in Bangladesh and explore how various initiatives might contribute to the vision. The focuswill be on workers rights’ and safety in the aftermath of the Rana Plaza Disaster and will look at lessons learned, actionstaken and further steps needed to ensure a sustainable industry in the future. The following key questions will be addressed:One year on from Rana Plaza what lessons have we learned for the garment and textile industry and globalsupply chains? What does Rana Plaza teach us about the responsibilities of different stakeholders in supply chains? What is the Bangladesh vision for its garment and textile industry, what is it doing to get there and what roledoes it see for others? If workers are the key competitive advantage for the Bangladesh garment and textile sector how can meaningfulparticipation, representation and engagement be developed to enhance this?
