Invitation and programWorld Energy Resources2013 surveyDo we need to reinvent thepeak oil theory? How do wepromote sustainableenergy? Can we reach apeak biomass situation?Contrary to the expectations of theworld running out of oil within a fewdecades, the so called notion of ‘peakoil’ which prevailed 20 years ago, hasalmost been forgotten. The globalcrude oil reserves are almost 60%larger today than in 1993 and the pro-duction of oil has gone up by 20%. Ifthe unconventional oil resources suchas oil shale are taken into account, the oil endowment of the world couldbe quadrupled.

Despite the exponential growth ofrenewable resources in percentageterms, in particular wind power andsolar PV, renewable energy stillaccounts for a small percentage ofenergy supply in most countries. Bio-mass, as one of the traditional renewa-bles, has grown with 23 % in the periodfrom 1993 - 2011.These are some of the key messagesemerging from the World EnergyResources survey 2013.
