PROGRAMME OF MEETINGS FOR THE DELEGATION OF
THE EUROPEAN COMMITTEE OF SOCIAL RIGHTS

The meetings in Copenhagen
form part of the Council of Europe’s Programme
of Activities with
respect to the European Social Charter. The aims are to maintain a dialogue with the national
authorities and other relevant actors on the implementation of the Charter, to raise awareness of
the treaty and its procedures and to encourage ratification of the Revised Charter and the
collective complaints procedure.
The European Social Charter is a Council of Europe treaty which guarantees social and
economic human rights. It was adopted in 1961 and revised in 1996.
The mission of the European Committee of Social Rights (ECSR) is to judge that the States
Parties are in conformity in law and in practice with the provisions of the European Social
Charter. In respect of national reports, the Committee adopts conclusions, in respect of
collective complaints, it adopts decisions. The Committee is composed of 15 independent,
impartial experts, elected by the Committee of Ministers for a 6-year term of office, renewable
once.
