Power and Politics in the Emerging Middle EastTuesday, 30 October 2012, 15.00-16.30Danish Institute for International StudiesMain AuditoriumStrandgade 71, ground floor, 1401 Copenhagen KBackground
The initial euphoria of the ‘Tahrir Square’ has now been replaced by difficult domestic struggles betweenthe military, Islamist parties, and liberal forces in many Arab states. These struggles are driven by deep-seated conflicts revolving around questions of identity, citizenship and religion, coming to the fore in thecontinuing battle over the making of the constitution, the role of religion in politics, and questions offundamental human rights. The regional level is also marked by new struggles, identities and alliances. A new type of Arab identity and“Arabism” may be in making, just as old Arab institutions such as the Arab League has been given a newrole. Power is also shifting hands. Iran and Hizbullah, which for nearly a decade have rallied popular Arabsupport, are now losing ground and popularity, whereas Egypt and Turkey are playing leading roles.Speakers
