Cooperative Security and NATO’s New Partnership PolicyMonday, 10 June 2013, 09.00-15.30Danish Institute for International StudiesMain AuditoriumStrandgade 71, ground floor, 1401 Copenhagen KBackgroundNATO’s Strategic Concept identifies ‘cooperative security’ as one of NATO’s three essential coretasks. It states that the promotion of Euro-Atlantic security is best assured through a wide networkof partnerships with countries and organizations across the globe which share NATO’s interest in apeaceful world. NATO’s new partnership policy is meant to prepare the Alliance for a rapidlychanging world where security challenges may come from far afield, and where solutions mayrequire extensive cooperation with other states and organizations which NATO has nottraditionally engaged with. The conference will focus on several key challenges – and perhaps some opportunities – for howNATO may be able to use its new approach to partnerships in a way that can support thecontinuation of an international order based on dialogue and cooperation across ideological andcultural differences.SpeakersNick Hækkerup,Minister of Defense for DenmarkSten Rynning,Professor and Director, CWS, SDUOle Wæver,Professor, University of CopenhagenJakob Aarøe Jørgensen,PhD Candidate, CWS, SDUFlorence Gaub,Analyst, European Union, Institute for Security StudiesKarsten Jakob Møller,Senior Analyst, DIISTrine Flockhart,Senior Researcher, DIISFabrice Pothier,Head of Policy Planning, Office of the Secretary General, NATOMagnus Christiansson,Associate Lecturer, Swedish National Defense CollegeThierry Legendre,Danish Ministry of Foreign AffairsJames Appathurai,Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy,NATOProgrammeMore details about the seminar are available on ourwebsite.Practical InformationThe seminar will be held inEnglish.Participation isfree of charge, butregistration is required. Please use ouronline registration formno later thanFriday, 7 June 2013 at 12.00 noon. Please await confirmation by e-mail from DIIS for participation.
