Technology Transfer Tradition1915
Professor Chaim Weizmann invented a new bio-technologicalmethod to produce acetone from starch while working as aResearcher at the University of Manchester.Weizmann (that owned over 100 patents) applied for apatent and transferred the technology to the British Navy.Weizmann was appointed to head the NavyLaboratories, which successfully mass produced acetonewhich was used to produce explosives during WWI.After the war, this became the common industrialmethod for Acetone production.Weizmann Established the Daniel Sieff ResearchInstitute, which later became the WeizmannInstitute of Science.Weizmann became Israel’s first president.

Basic Scienceis notResearch and DevelopmentFaraday's experiments on electricity, were driven by curiosity but broughtus in the modern era of electricity.
Michael Faraday1791-1867
Electric light came from innovation driven by basic science.
No amount of R&D on the candlecould ever have done that.
Technological developments arefueled byscientific innovationscoming from academia. Therefore,
transfer of new ideas and discoveriesfrom academia to the private sectorisessential to the industry.

Internal Conditions forsuccessful Tech Transfer• Scientists’ focus on excellence inBasicScience, not on commercialization.• Apro-activetech transfer operation.• Tech Transfer officers: background inBusiness and Academia.• A few years of investment by theUniversity (patents, marketing, agreements) before income is generated.• Clearinternal IP rules, enforced byUniversity management.
However!Academy-Industry cooperation, as
love making between hedgehogs. It isa desired activity that has to beexercised with extreme caution.
