Background

Climate change is rarely the sole cause of conflict, but it can intensify and multiply existingconflicts over natural resources. How should development cooperation address this challenge, andwhat are the experiences from past efforts at addressing conflict over natural resources at the local, national and transboundary levels? These issues will be explored through presentations of experiences from East Africa, the Sahel andthe Nile Basin by three prominent international speakers, Kennedy Mkutu, Marie Monimart andAna Cascao, who will discuss root causes of conflicts and efforts to address them in relation topastoral conflicts in Kenya, ‘Peace Wells’ in Niger, and transboundary water management in theNile basin. The seminar will furthermore present the main findings from a DIIS study commissioned by theDanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the experiences from natural resource management inconflict prevention and resolution, and how development cooperation can help address the conflictmultiplier effect of climate change. The aim of the seminar is to inspire practitioners and researchers working on climate-relatedconflicts in the developing countries on how to address climate-related conflicts in developmentcooperation.
