To: Folketingets Sundhedsudvalg,
On behalf of the Epilepsy Section and the Epilepsy Surgery Program of the Institute of Neurology, University Hospital,Montevideo, Uruguay, we are writing to you regarding the Epilepsy Hospital in Dianalund. It was with surprise and concern that we heard about the potential closure of the only Epilepsy Centre in Denmark. For theinternational scientific community, the Danish Epilepsy Centre stands as a reference for all those interested in the field ofEpilepsy. Ultimately, it means an institution that represents Denmark.Apart from the important assistance activities, Dianalund has an outstanding research profile. In fact, it has become arecognized research focus in Europe. In this sense, we could mention its role in the development and leadership of aninternational research consortium investigating the provocative and inhibitory properties of different cognitive and sensorystimuli with respect to epileptic seizures. This group has not only made several communications during the recentInternational Epilepsy Congress in Rome, but has also established different lines for ongoing and future investigations. Theparticipation of the Danish Epilepsy Centre is crucial and vital for the mentioned international consortium. If we were to additionally take into account individual capabilities, Prof. Dr. Peter Wolf is one of the most relevant scientists inthe field of Epilepsy worldwide. He has made enormous contributions both in research and education, addressing epileptologyat a level of excellence. Just as an example of his recognized activities, he has conducted the International League againstEpilepsy as President during a recent and very fruitful period. We would therefore be very grateful if you could consider taking the necessary steps to preserve the Danish Epilepsy Centre, whose existence is extremely valuable for international research.Yours sincerely,
