The Blue Lagoon with the futuristic-looking Svartsengi geothermal plant visible in the background.
Iceland - The Land of Fire and IceIceland is part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge formed by magma that wells up through the rifts along the ridge. The magma heats the rock above, sending heated groundwater percolating to the surface in the form ofhot springs. The heat is distinguishing the country as the Land of Fire and Ice.The Blue Lagoon is created and maintained by the condensed steam from Orka geothermal power plant.During its path through soil layers the hot water takes up carbon dioxide and it is released when the waterreaches the surface. Here the carbon dioxide is captured and reacted with hydrogen to form methanol –the motor fuel of the future. The process electricity is generated on the very same geothermal plant.
