How UN Ideas Change the WorldTuesday, 14 December 2010, 13.30-16.00Eigtveds PakhusSal IIAsiatisk Plads 2 G1448 Copenhagen KBackgroundIdeas and concepts are a main driving force in human progress, and they are arguably the mostimportant contribution of the United Nations. Ten years of research by the independent UNIntellectual History Project (UNIHP) shows why international organizations also live or die by thequality of the people who work in them and by the quality of the ideas and policy proposals thatcome from themThe UNIHP, started in 1999, has been tracing the origins and the evolution of key ideas aboutinternational economic and social development, with some inroads into peace and security, nurtured under UN auspices. The motivations behind these ideas as well as their relevance, influence, and impact have been assessed against the backdrop of the socio-economic and politicalsituations of individual countries, the global economy, and major international developments. It isthe first project to have compiled the intellectual history of the world organization’s contributionsto setting past, present, or future development agendas. It has produced 17 volumes and a cd-romwith complete oral histories of 79 individuals. This public seminar will address the lessons for strengthening the UN to better respond to thechallenges of the 21stcentury, addressed in the 2009 UNIHP capstone volume,UN Ideas ThatChanged the World.SpeakersThomas G.
