PRESS RELEASE FROM THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRSExamination of Danish Development Assistance – top marks from OECD
Danish development cooperation sets a good example for other donor countries. This is the conclusion in an assessment ofDanish development assistance recently published by OECD.According to a new report from OECD’s Development Assistance Committee (DAC) Danishdevelopment cooperation is of high quality and the new development strategy is considered a goodbasis for Denmark’s future development cooperation.In connection with the release of the report, DAC Chairman Brian Atwood says:“Denmark’s contribution to global development – its efficient and effective partnerships – is a goodexample to other donors. Its efforts to encourage a strong civil society movement in developingcountries ensure that the poor will have a voice.”The report gives many examples of best practices in the work with fragile states, developmentefficiency, multilateral assistance, risk assessment, strategy for civil society, humanitarian assistance anddecentralization of the administration of assistance. It also provides recommendations to how Denmarkcan improve its development assistance, for an example, by strengthening communication anddocumentation of achieved results.In connection with OECD’s examination, the Danish Minister for Development Cooperation SørenPind says:“The assessment is an endorsement of the strategy for Denmark’s development cooperation released bythe Government last year. I am pleased to see, that the OECD confirms that we are among theleading donors, also regarding the quality of our efforts. The report also provides a number of usefulrecommendations which we will look into.”Every third or fourth year OECD examines the development assistance of its member states. This takesplace through a Peer Review where two other OECD countries are appointed “examiner”. In the caseof Denmark, New Zealand and Luxemburg along with the OECD Secretariat performed a thoroughreview of Danish development assistance. During the examination the OECD-team had severalmeetings in Copenhagen with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Foreign Affairs Committee of theDanish Parliament, NGO’s, enterprises and others. The team also visited the Danish Embassy in Maliand assessed the Danish development assistance in practice.The official report with the recommendations and conclusions of the Peer Review can be downloadedhere.
