Dear Parliamentarians,We are pleased to announce the2011 UNCTAD Public Symposiumwhich will address:Making Trade andFinance Work for People and the Planet.The Symposium will be convened on22-24 June 2011,at thePalais des Nations in Geneva.At the Symposium, civil society, parliamentarians, academics, private sector entities, the media, UNagencies, and UNCTAD member States will share their perspectives on topics likely to dominate the globalpolitical agenda in 2011 and 2012.
As you may know, UNCTAD has a distinguished history of debate and consensus-building. With theSymposium –- now in its third year -– we are striving to broaden that process so as to better reflect the ideasand opinions of different development actors on the themes below:Financial and monetary reforms for sustainable development: Global and regional initiatives(22 June)What are the global and regional initiatives needed to avert new crises and make trade and financework for full and productive employment, reduce inequalities and promote sustainable development?Making the transition to a green economy fair and equitable (23 June)How can the move to a green economy, in the context of sustainable development and povertyeradication, be fair –- in terms of finance, trade, investment and technology -– between and withincountries?
The programme will include a combination of plenary and parallel breakout sessions organized by UNCTADand partner organizations.On 24 June, civil society groups will have an opportunity to organize strategy sessions related to key politicalprocesses underway, including the upcoming United Nations Conference on Trade and Development(UNCTAD XIII, 2012); the G20 Summit (2011) and the United Nations Conference on SustainableDevelopment (Rio +20, 2012).Please note that the registration process is now open atwww.unctad.info/en/Public-Symposium-2011/Registration-Form/.Additional information, including guidelines for the submission of writtencontributions/papers will be sent in a follow up email, and will also be soon available online atwww.unctad.org/publicsymposium.Please find attached the flyer for the Symposium in Arabic, English, French and Spanish.We look forward to your participation and to welcoming you in Geneva.Best regards,Amel Haffouz
