Announcement
‘Brown Bag Lunch’ with Kirk Hamilton, Lead Environment Economist from theWorld Bank: “The Changing Wealth of Nations - Measuring sustainabledevelopment in the new millennium”Sustainability Science Centre, University of Copenhagen, is pleased to invite to a ‘brown bag lunch’on the6thof April, 12.30-13.30with Lead Environment EconomistKirk Hamiltonfrom the WorldBank. He will give the lecture:“The Changing Wealth of Nations - Measuring sustainabledevelopment in the new millennium”which is also the title of a new book published by the WorldBank. The main thesis of the book is:"How we measure development will drive how we dodevelopment."Dr. Hamilton will present findings from a large study measuring the change inwealth from 1995-2005 in over 100 countries. For example, the study finds that in 2005 naturalcapital (forests, farmland, minerals and energy) constituted 20-35% of the total wealth ofdeveloping countries, exceeding the share of produced capital in low income countries. Intangiblewealth, that is an amalgam of human and institutional capital, is by far the largest share of totalwealth in virtually all countries. New analysis highlights the role of intangible wealth indevelopment and the value of accumulated stocks of carbon dioxide emitted by countries andregions. So come and use this opportunity to hear Dr. Hamilton ideas on how to measuresustainable development.Kirk Hamilton is a lead economist in the Development Research Group at the World Bank, a co-author of "The Changing Wealth of Nations" (2011), "World Development Report 2010:Development and Climate Change," and the principal author of "Where is the Wealth of Nations?"(2006). He leads research on the links between poverty and environment, ‘greening’ the nationalaccounts, and the economics of climate change. Prior to joining the World Bank, Dr. Hamilton wasa senior research fellow at the UK Centre for Social and Economic Research on the GlobalEnvironment, and Deputy Director of National Accounts for the government of Canada, where hestarted Canada's work on comprehensive wealth measurement.
