Date: Fri, 18 Feb 2011 14:09:00 -0700Subject: {GEfreeMT} Purdue University Researcher: Roundup May Be Causing Miscarriages inCattle, HumansFrom: [email protected]To: [email protected]Researcher: Roundup May Be Causing Miscarriages in Cattle, HumansWed, Feb 16,2011Pesticide ToxicityLetter to USDA Urges'Emergency'Action
WHILE INSISTING HE DOES NOT WANT to be an alarmist, one ofthe nation's senior soilscientists is alerting the federal government to a newly discovered organism that may have thepotential to cause infertility and spontaneous abortion in farm animals and, potentially, humans.Dr. Don Huber, professor emeritus at Purdue University, believes the appearance and prevalence ofthe unnamed organism may be related to the nation' s over reliance on the weed killer known asRoundup. In a letter to Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, obtained by SafeLawns, the professoris calling on the federal government to immediately rescind the Jan. 27th decision to allowgenetically modified alfalfa to be released to farmers this spring."A team of senior plant and animal scientists have recently brought to my attention the discovery ofan electron microscopic pathogen that appears to significantly impact the health of plants, animalsand probably human beings," wrote Huber in the letter, whieh is quoted here with his permission."Basedon a review of the data, it is widespread, very serious, and is in mueh higher concentrationsin Roundup Ready (RR) soybeans and com-suggesting a link with the RR gene, or more likelythe presence ofRoundup. This organism appears NEW to science!"In a phone interview today, Huber said he was assured that the United States Department ofAgriculture was taking his letter seriously - yet he remained deeply pessimistic that his wamingswould ultimately lead to affirmative action."I believe we've reached the tipping point toward a potential disaster with the safety of our foodsupply," he said."Theabuse, ar call it over use ifyou will, ofRoundup, is having profoundly badconsequences in the soil. We've seen that for years. The appearance ofthis new pathogen may be asignal that we've gone too far."Huber also admitted that he could be wrong about this pathogen's link to Roundup, but said thatmuch further study is needed for that final assessment. In the meantime, he said, it's grosslyirresponsible of the government to allow Roundup Ready alfalfa, which would bring the widespreadspraying of Roundup to millions of more acres and introduce far more Roundup into the foodsupply.I
"For the past 40 years,
have been a scientist in the professional and military agencies that evaluate
and prepare for natural and manrnade biological threats, including germ warfare and diseaseoutbreaks," wrote Huber in his letter to Vilsack. "Based on this experience, I believe the threat weare facing from this pathogen is unique and ofhigh-risk status. In layman's terms, it should betreated as an emergency."Huber explained that the search for the new pathogen was instigated by the increase of cattleinfertility and unexplained cases of spontaneous abortion in several western states in the pastseveralyears. The common denominator, he said, appears to be the prevalence ofthe new pathogenthat can only beviewedat 36,000 times magnification. Fears were increased when this pathogenwas also found in mothers who had recently miscarried."That suggests the potential that the pathogen entered the mother in the food supply," said Hubertoday. "Could it be from contaminated plants or animals? We don't know that answer yet, butsurely more resources from the government need to be put into answering that question."And, in the meantime, any new additional uses of Roundup should be made illegal, according toHuber and his collaborators,"Theorganism is prolific in plants infected with two pervasive diseases that are driving downyieldsand farmer income-sudden death syndrome (SDS) in soy, and Goss' wilt in corn," he said. "Thepathogen is also found in the fungal causative agent of SDS (Fusarium solani fsp glycines).Laboratory tests have confirmed the presence ofthis organism in a wide variety oflivestock thathaveexperiencedspontaneous abortions and infertility. Preliminary results from ongoing researchhave..a1sobeenable to reproduce abortions in a clinica] setting."Huber, a retired military Colonel, closed his letter to Vilsack by imploring the government tocommit the resources necessary to find definitive answers."Itis urgent to examine whether the side effects of glyphosate use may have facilitated the growthof this pathogen, or allowed it to cause greater harm to weakened plant and animal hosts. It is welldocumented that glyphosate promote s soil pathogens and is already implicated with the increase ofmore than 40 plant diseases; it dismantles plant defenses by chelating vital nutrients; and it reducesthe bioavailability of nutrients in feed, which in turn can cause animal disorders ... (The pathogen)deserves immediate attentionwithsignificant resources to avoid a general collapse of our criticalagricultural infrastructure."To receive anelectroniccopy ofthe letter, emailPaul(cV,safelawns.org
