Ban appoints Jordan Ryan to head UNDP crisis prevention and recovery

The UNDP Administrator is pleased to announce that UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon hasappointed Jordan Ryan (USA) as Assistant Secretary-General, Assistant Administrator of UNDPand Director of the Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery (BCPR). Mr. Ryan will replaceKathleen Cravero.The Secretary-General is grateful for Ms. Cravero’s tireless effort and dedicated service tostrengthen UNDP’s crisis prevention and recovery capacity to help countries in need. Hersuccessor inherits a Bureau that is well positioned to continue carrying out its important tasksin the years to come.Mr. Ryan has worked in the United Nations for almost twenty years, and brings with him awealth of development experience, including in post-crisis settings. He has been serving as theDeputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General (Recovery and Governance) and theUN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator of the United Nations Mission in Liberia since 2006.Prior to that Mr. Ryan was the UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative inVietnam from 2001-2005. He was earlier assigned to Headquarters as Deputy Director of theOffice of the Administrator from 1996-1997 and then as Director of that Office from 1997-2001. He had previously served in Viet Nam as Senior Assistant Resident Representative andthen later as Deputy Resident Representative from 1993-1996.Mr. Ryan began his career with UNDP as an Assistant Resident Representative in China in1991. Prior to joining UNDP, he was in private practice as an attorney, both in California andNew York, and as an international legal consultant in Asia and in the Middle East.Mr. Ryan holds a B.A. in Anthropology from Yale University, a J.D. from the GeorgeWashington University and a Masters Degree from the Columbia University School ofInternational and Public Affairs. He was a visiting fellow at the Kennedy School of Government,Harvard University in 2001.Born on 29 August 1950, Mr. Ryan is married and has one daughter.For more information:UNDP's work in crisis prevention and recovery
