different GearsThe European Cyclists’ Federation, the City of Frederiksberg and the City of Copenhagenare excited to announceVELO-CITY GLOBAL 2010– a conference that brings togethercity planners, decision makers, cycling experts, NGO’s and researchers from all over theworld to discuss the potential and challenges of cycling.The world faces huge challenges in terms of congestion and pollution in the cities,health related illnesses like obesity and cardiovascular diseases, and global warming.The prospects of the bicycle in tackling these problems have yet to be fully explored,but the time is ripe for unleashing this potential and spreading the word.Velo-city Global 2010 will serve as a platform for the exchange of knowledge, research,ideas and experiences. We need to reassess the way we designour cities and we need to come up with alternatives that make sense to people of today.A good point of departure is coming together to exchange and create ideas within the field of mobility and urbanplanning. the municipality of frederiksberg is located right inthe middle of copenhagen, which means that coopera-tion and the exchange of knowledge of cycling betweenthe two municipalities are vital. John Whitelegg is visiting Professor of SustainableTransport at Liverpool John Moores University andProfessor of Sustainable Development at Universityof York’s Stockholm Environment Institute. Hisresearch focuses on how promoting sustainablemodes of transport significantly benefits health,climate, environment, congestion, liveability, andeconomy.As Whitelegg sees it, cycling is a crucial test of ourcollective will to act to reduce greenhousegas emissions and demonstrate that reductionequals a better quality of life and a healthierpopulation. His research shows that by switchingthe several million car trips being done worldwideevery day to bikes would bring an immediateclimate change gain. According to Whitelegg, this

Janette Sadik-Khan is the Commissioner of the NewYork City Department of Transportation andis behind an ambitious strategy to make New YorkCity more green and accessible to cyclists andpedestrians alike. This includes completing 200miles of on-street bike lanes to enhance cyclistsafety, closing off two segments of Broadway toconstruct pedestrian plazas with outdoor seating,and introducing the annual event Summer Streetswhere certain NYC streets are closed off for half aday making them available to cyclists, roller skatersand walkers.

Nørrebrogade, a central shopping street in Copenhagen, was put on a“road diet” in 2009 and closed to thoroughfare car traffic. Cycle trackswere preliminarily widened to accommodate the growing number ofcyclists, which now amounts to some 36,000 cyclists a day. For a test period, the DanishState Railways [DSB] haveagreed to allow bicycles totravel free on the S-trains, thecommuting trains that serveGreater Copenhagen. At CPH1:1 you can try out this newinitiative for yourself and giveyour feedback to representativesfrom the DSB.
Clearance of snow on the cycle trackshas top priority in the winter months inCopenhagen. During the rest of the year,the city council puts great efforts intomaintaining the tracks by clearing themfrom broken glass, mending holes andattaching access ramps. But daily main-tenance remains an on-going project. AtCPH 1:1 you will get the chance to discussyour thoughts on this type of prioritiza-tion of the cycling infrastructure with theCopenhagen maintenance crew.

The politicians of Copenhagenbegan changing priorities, and despite resistancefrom the engineers who claimed that there wasn’troom for more cycle tracks, the cycle track networkwas extended even on the most complicated roads.Eventually, cycle planning became mainstream inCopenhagen, and cycling is now considered a distincttraffic category on a par with motor- and pedestriantraffic.The cycle track network is the backbone of cyclinginfrastructure in Copenhagen. Recently, green cycleroutes are increasingly contributing to improvedcycling conditions, and much is also being donefor better intersection designs. From having focusentirely on engineering and safety, the city is nowalso promoting Copenhagen cycling culture in abroad sense.Copenhagen’s politicians are in front when it comesto cycling policy. Although Copenhagen is seen by many as a modelcity when it comes to cycling, the way to get this farhas not been easy.Niels Jensen is Senior Bicycle Planner at the Cityof Copenhagen and has been doing cycling related re-search since the 70’s. His account of the developmentof cycling in Copenhagen shows that it is possibleto make cycling a preferred means of transport in alarger city – despite strong resistance and a history ofcar-oriented planning.According to Niels Jensen, Copenhagen has builtcycle tracks along the major roads for 100 years.Bicycles and trams were the dominating meansof transport until the 1960’s when many citizensstarted buying cars. The following 20-30 years, thecar took over traffic policy and planning. As muchcycling infrastructure was already in place, and many

• For example, the EUROCITIES Mobility Forum hasdecided to have one of their 3 annual meetingsas a co-conference during Velo-city Global.• Scientists for Cycling – a new research networkinitiated by the European Cylists’ Federation – willalso be present at Velo-city Global 2010. Theaim of the network is to bring together scientistsfrom a variety of disciplines, who carry outcycling related research to exchange knowledge,methods, research results and funding opportuni-ties. Development of the network strategy will bepresented at the Velo-city Global 2010 conference.• Finally, a new coalition between Mayors of CyclingCities is under way. At the Summit for Mayors dur-ing the COP15 in Copenhagen, Mayor Job Cohenof Amsterdam called for even more exchange ofknowledge and cooperation between cities in orderto improve the environment. He then offered totake leadership in a coalition between mayors to
