welcomeWelcome to Denmark and the city of Copenhagen!We have the pleasure of hosting the 15th UnitedNations Climate Change Conference (COP15)taking place at Bella Center in Copenhagen fromthe 7th to the 18th of December, 2009.The conference will be the largest internationalpolitical conference ever held in Denmark withparticipants from 192 countries representinggovernments, the business community, and civilsociety. We anticipate approximately 15,000participants.The world is facing a major challenge. We cannotcontinue using fossil fuels the way we do today.Scientists have laid out the risks we face and ithas become clearer than ever that now is the timeto take serious action on climate change. If we donot act today, the opportunity will not only slip outof our hands but it will also become much moreexpensive to carry out the necessary low-carbontransition in the future.As the host of COP15, we, the Danish Government,will do our utmost to create common ground fora coherent global response to this challenge. Thetask is daunting – but our mission is clear. Weneed to agree on an ambitious, global agreement inCopenhagen that meets the challenge set by science.To facilitate the process of reaching agreement,we will do our best to make your stay in Denmark2

no gift-policY At previous COPs and similar internationalconferences, participants have usually receivedgifts and so-called conference-kits with variousitems from the host country.As part of efforts to reduce the environmentaland climate impact of the conference, it has beendecided to discontinue the practice of givinggifts at COP15. The DKK 4 million (app. USD800,000) hereby saved has instead been spenton climate scholarships, allowing 11 candidatesfrom all over the world to carry out 2-yearclimate related master’s programmes at Danishuniversities.inteRpRetations In the two Plenary rooms (Tycho Brahe and KarenBlixen) simultaneous interpretation is available inthe official languages of the United Nations.The Press Conference Room (Hall 15) has beenprovided with two interpretation booths.
