Dear Madam, Dear Sir,At the invitation ofEuroheat & Power, one of its associate members, theEuropean Energy Forumisholding a dinner debate on:DISTRICT ENERGY CLIMATE SUMMITOn November 3rd2009 in COPENHAGENAs the world looks ahead to the goal of a new global climate agreement, our minds are focused on whatneeds to be achieved. District energy systems are essential to reducing CO2 emissions and increasingenergy efficiency in our cities. The environmental, economic and social benefits of harnessing surplusheat and using local renewable energy sources make district heating and cooling a sensible choice forcommunities. Our dinner-debate will provide the opportunity to discuss future “high-efficiency, low-carbon” urbanenergy systems in a global context. It takes place on the 3rdof November 2009 at 19:00h at the ScandicHotel Copenhagen. The debate, to which national politicians are also invited, will be a truly internationalone. With a wide range of expertise in the field, the debate speakers include Antonio Bonomo,President of Euroheat & Power;Robert ThorntonPresident of the US based International DistrictEnergy Association, adding a transatlantic perspective; and Wildrid Petrie, Executive Vice President ofCofely for Northern Europe. The debate will be chaired by Britta Thomsen –MEP Denmark. While only the dinner-debate is hosted by the EEF, participants are invited to attend the whole summitwhich is organised by the district energy organisations on both sides of the Atlantic in cooperation withthe International Energy Agency. Please find enclosed the details of the entire summit programme which includes two study tours on the4thof November: one to experience urban climate and energy intelligence live, while the otherdemonstrates a 100% locally renewable energy system.Dinner, lunch and accommodation will be offered by our sponsors, while flight arrangements have to bemet by participants. If you would like to participate please inform our EEF Secretariat using the attached registration formwhich also provides you with the information on the different travel options.I do hope you will be able to join us for this interesting visit.Yours sincerely,Giles Chichester MEPPresident of the European Energy Forum
Copenhagen Energy Summit Study Tour4 November 2009EnergyToursinvites you to experience the Danish energy revolution first hand. Together with theCopenhagen Energy Summit Team, we offer you the following Study Tour:9:00ThemesIntroduction to district heating in DenmarkVisit to Metropolitan Copenhagen Heating Transmission CompanyThe main objective for CTR is to utilize waste heat from refuse incineration plantsand combined heat and power plants. The company is responsible for the purchaseof heat from production units and for the transport of this heat through thetransmission net for sale to its five owners and to VEKS – CTR’s affiliated companyto the west.CTR also operates back-up units and produces heat on its own accountduring peak load periods.
The visit includes introduction to CTR’s control room and peak load station10:30Visit to Kongens Nytorv District Cooling ProjectThe Kongens Nytorv district cooling project covers central uptown Copenhagen, witha number of shopping centres, financialinstitutions, hotels and cultural institutionsas customers. The project is expected toprovide a 65 percent reduction in CO2emissions at a capacity of 15 MW. Theproject is under construction at present and a visit to the site will give anintroduction to the current technology opportunities in district cooling.

Visit to AmagerforbrændingEvery day of the year Amagerforbrændingenrelieve the inhabitants and companies of the fivecapital municipalities Dragør, Frederiksberg,Hvidovre, Copenhagen and Tårnby of their wasteand supply energy to their households in return. In total this amounts to 420,000 tons of wastewhich is converted into electricity and districtheating supplying approximately 100,000households.

Copenhagen Energy Summit Malmö Tour4 November 2009E.ON Energy invites you to experience one of the examples of a sustainable city,Västra Hamnen, where E.ON hasbeen dealing for over ten years with 100-percent locally renewable energy. Together with the CopenhagenEnergy Summit Team, we offer you the following E.ON tour:THEMES9:00Departure from Copenhagen Scandic Hotel in Direction of Bo01 area, western Harbour, Malmö, Sweden
10:00Visit to the Bo01 area in Western Harbour with a close look at the 100% renewable energysystemThe Västra Hamnen district in Malmö is an example of a sustainable city. Here E.ON has contributed tothe construction of an attractive city district that is entirely self-sufficient, with renewable energy fromwater, wind, sun and compostable waste. The basic concept is that Västra Hamnen’s energy should be generated by commercially accessibletechnology.A short distance from Västra Hamnen is the wind power plant that is the backbone of the district’senergy system. Nowadays, wind power is a mature technology, and this is reflected in the plant’soperating profit. Since 2001, the wind power plant has delivered electricity in accordance with theproject plans, essentially without interruption. An aquifer is a natural underground storage reservoir. They are located in two rows, 200 meters apart. In the winter, water at a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius is drawn up from one row of wells, knownas the warm side. The water is used as a heat source in a heat pump, and after cooling, it is pumpedback into the aquifer through the wells of the other row, down on the cold side. The heat from the heat pump is distributed to the district heating network. Over the course of a year, just over five million kWh of heat is produced, meeting 90 percent of the district’s heat requirements.During the summer, the process is reversed, so that cooling is produced for the district coolingnetwork. Over the course of a year, this provides about three million kWh of cooling. The goal for the total energy (electricity, heat and cooling) use in the properties was to use a maximumof 105 kWh per square meter annually. At the same time, it was important to ensure residents’comfort. These are very tough goals, but it has been possible to achieve them with the right buildingtechnology and the right energy system.Through effective planning and well-conceived design and construction, many of the properties haveachieved the goals, in some cases by a good margin. The activities in Västra Hamnen have shown that it is possible to create functioning systems for wiseliving and smart property management.
