June 2008 High-Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS
Dear Madam President,
Dear Mr. President,
The 2008 High-Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS will take place at United Nations Headquarters in New York on 10-11 June, 2008. The Meeting will review progress made in implementing the 2001 Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS and the 2006 Political Declaration on HIV/AIDS, and it will seek to promote continued engagement of leaders in a comprehensive global response to HIV/AIDS.
UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/62/178 specifically encourages Member States to include parliamentarians in their national delegation to the high-level review meeting.  May I therefore urge you to make sure that members of your parliament who are active on HIV/AIDS issues are included in your country’s national delegation to this important event.
The IPU, in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), will hold a briefing for the parliamentarians attending the session in the afternoon of Monday, 9 June 2008, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in UN Conference Room 7.Â
The briefing will provide legislators with up to date information on the issues to be discussed during the UN High-Level Review. It will serve as a forum for an exchange of views on major issues such as stigma and discrimination, including travel restrictions against people living with HIV/AIDS. It will also provide an opportunity for MPs to discuss follow up to the conclusions of the first Global Parliamentary Meeting on HIV/AIDS (Manila, November 2007).
The languages of the parliamentary session will be English, French and Spanish. I would be grateful if you could ensure that the enclosed registration form is returned to the IPU Office in New York, preferably before 30 May 2008. In accordance with established practice, requests for assistance regarding accommodation in New York and UN entry passes should be addressed directly to your country’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations.
Yours sincerely,
Anders B. Johnsson
Secretary General
