Mr. Henri Tiphagne is the founder and executive director of Peoples Watch, India. Peoples Watch is a national human rights organisation present in nine Indian states working to document and legally pursue human rights abuses. Through human rights educational programmes for children in school in 13 of India’s states, the Institute of Human Rights Education of Peoples Watch tries to promote a culture of human rights. In addition, People’s Watch also runs a Rehabilitation Centre for victims of domestic violence and torture and promotes the building of a “Citizens for Human Rights Movement” in the state of Tamilnadu with presently 1400 units. Mr. Tiphagne started as a student leader and went on to become a civil rights lawyer and in recent years also a prominent human rights activist on the international scene. He is particularly known for his fight against torture in his home state, Tamil Nadu, and India as such, and has worked extensively to combat caste discrimination. Mr. Tiphagne also is one of the founders of NCDHR in India – the National Campaign on Dalit Human Rights. He is also a Member of the National Core Group pf NGOs of the National Human Rights Commission of India.
