Dear Mr Speaker,

INTERNATIONAL PARLIAMENTARY CONFERENCE (IPC) 16-22 NOVEMBER 2008

INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT: AID EFFECTIVENESS

CPA UK will hold an IPC on the effectiveness of international aid from Sunday 16 – Saturday 22 November 2008 at the Houses of Parliament in London.  Some 120 parliamentary delegates and observers from NGOs will attend.

The broad aim of the Conference is to challenge parliamentarians from across the Commonwealth and the world to hold their respective executives to account for development funds given, received and allocated.

Given the importance of the subject, we are inviting you to nominate two delegates from your legislature, preferably one Government member and one Opposition member to attend.  A gender balance would be welcomed.  Delegates will participate in all the conference sessions as well as the social functions (any official receptions, lunches and dinners in the programme).

The IPC will be oversubscribed so you are encouraged to arrange for your bids to be sent to us as soon as possible and by Friday 25 July 2008 at the latest as places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.  We anticipate that this IPC will be of particular interest to Members on the relevant parliamentary scrutiny committees of donor and recipient countries.

I very much hope that you will accept our invitation.  Views and contributions from your legislature will be extremely important for the success of the conference.  The conference will be conducted in English, with facilities for interpretation into three languages.

Delegates will be responsible for arranging and funding their own flights to London.  CPA UK will fund accommodation, meals and transport costs associated with the official programme.  No provision will be made for spouses and children at the Conference.

I should be grateful if you would arrange for nominations with an accompanying CV to be sent to the CPA UK Branch by Friday 25 July 2008.

Yours sincerely,

Andrew
