Bilag 1

Dear Colleagues,

As you know we are preparing together with our Portuguese friends the Joint Committee Meeting on Education and Culture, which will be held in the European Parliament in Brussels on 18 -19 December, 2007.

We have drafted a short, standard invitation letter to be send out shortly. Following the Hague guidlines we address the speakers of the EU parliaments in their original language. Due to time constraints we cannot count on the official translation of the letter, therefore I would like to kindly ask your help. Please translate the text below into your own mother tongue.

Dear Speaker,

We are pleased to inform you that the European Parliament and the Portuguese Assembleia da República have decided to organize a "Joint Committee Meeting" focusing on educational and cultural issues.

We would be grateful if you would inform the chairperson of the competent committee (or committees) of your distinguished Parliament that the above meeting will take place on 18 and 19 December 2007 in the European Parliament's premises in Brussels.

We have the pleasure to invite each national Parliament of every EU Member State to be represented by 4 members plus 2 administrators. As is customary, the total number of 4 delegates also applies to bi-cameral parliament. Countries applying for EU membership are invited to send 4 members as observers.

Your Parliament's administration will shortly receive detailed information concerning the practical arrangements for the meeting.

We strongly believe that a meeting of this kind, dealing with educational and cultural issues of general interest, will allow for a fruitful exchange of views and contribute to better mutual understanding among parliaments in the entire European Union.

We thank you warmly in advance for your appreciated support for this joint initiative.

Yours sincerely,

President of the European Parliament            President of the Assembleia da República

Many thanks in advance.

Best regard/Krzysztov
