Nuclear Waste in Sweden
The Swedish National Council for Nuclear Waste is an independent scientific committee within the Ministry of the Environment. Its mandate is to advise the Government in matters relating to nuclear waste and the decommissioning of nuclear facilities. The Council´s members are independent experts within different areas of importance for the disposal of radioactive waste, not only in technology and science, but also in areas such as ethics and social sciences.
    The Swedish National Council for Nuclear Waste has since long been known as KASAM but since the meaning of that name (an acronym) has been very difficult to understand in Sweden KASAM has decided to drop this name (both in texts in Swedish and in English translations) and to use the full name or shorter versions of that (eg. the Council for Nuclear Waste, the Council etc). The role and the responsibilites of the Council are the same as before, only the name has changed.
State-of-the Art Report 2007–responsibility of current generation, freedom of future generation
The Council´s activities include describing the state of knowledge in the nuclear waste area every third year in a so-called state-of-the-art report. The 2007 report is the ninth in this series. The main report (90 pages), entitled Nuclear Waste, State-of-the-Art Report 2007 – responsibility of current generation, freedom of future generations (SOU 2007:38), is now available on www.kasam.org.     This year the main report above also is accompanied by the following four in-depth-reports that will be available in English during spring next year.

                          development and challenge;
