To the Foreign Affairs Committees of

Denmark, Finland, Iceland,

Norway and Sweden

Copenhagen, 27th of November 2006

Dear friends,

It is a great pleasure for us to inform you that the dates and place for the up-coming UN field trip for Nordic parliamentarians in 2007 now have been set.

The field trip will go to Mozambique and the dates will be from the 21st of January (arrival in Maputo, Mozambique) to the 27th of January 2007 (departure from Maputo, Mozambique).

The field trip for Nordic parliamentarians will be hosted by the UN Country Team in Mozambique in co-operation with the country offices of UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF and WFP.

Mozambique is chosen not only because it is an important development partner to the Nordic countries, but also because the UN country team here has already taken concrete steps towards real coordination and delivering as One UN. Furthermore, the Prime Minister of Mozambique was one of the co-chairs on the recently launched High Level Panel report on UN reform, and several of the recommendations from this report will be carried out in Mozambique.  This mission will thus give the parliamentarians a glimpse into the "future of the UN".

The objective of the field trip is to provide the participating Nordic parliamentarians with the possibilities of seeing how UN works in the field. Within the frame of the Millennium Development Goals the field trip will investigate the options of an enhanced UN co-operation on country level, as suggested in the High Level Panel on UN reforms.

The UN Country Team in Mozambique is currently – together with Nordic offices of UNDP, UNFPA and WFP – developing a comprehensive programme for the field trip. Highlights that will be part of the programme include:

-          Meetings with representatives of UN organizations

-          Meetings with representatives of Mozambique government and parliament

-          Meeting with representatives of the Nordic countries

-          Field trip to one of the provinces in Mozambique

The financial set up of the UN field trips is that that the Foreign Affairs committees cover the expenses for the flight tickets and per diem for their representatives and the UN Country team covers the expenses for local transport and interpretations. We hope that the Foreign Affairs committees as soon as possible will name two representatives from each committee to participate in the field trip.

We will come back to you with a detailed programme as soon as it is available, and we are looking very much forward to the 2007 UN field trip for Nordic parliamentarians.

Yours sincerely
