United Nations Mission in Liberia
United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan on 28December 2005, appointed Jordan Ryan of the UnitedStates as his Deputy Special Representative for Recoveryand Governance for Liberia, effective 1 January 2006.Mr. Ryan, who also serves as the United Nations ResidentCoordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Liberia, hashad a long and distinguished career with the UnitedNations. He was most recently the United NationsResident Coordinator and United Nations DevelopmentProgramme (UNDP) Resident Representative in Viet Nam.Prior to that appointment, Mr. Ryan served as the DirectorDeputy Special Representativeof the Secretary-Generalfor Recovery and Governance

of the Office of the Administrator, UNDP in New Yorkfrom 1997 to 2001.Earlier in his career, Mr. Ryan held the positions of UNDPDeputy Resident Representative and Senior AssistantResident Representative in Viet Nam. He was also theUNDP Assistant Resident Representative in China. Beforejoining the United Nations, Mr. Ryan worked as anattorney in New York and California and an internationallegal consultant in Asia and in the Middle East.Mr. Ryan holds an M.A. in international affairs fromColumbia University, a J.D. from the National Law Centerat George Washington University, and a B.A. inanthropology from Yale University. He was a visitingfellow at the Kennedy School of Government, HarvardUniversity in 2001.
